Total Sanitation Promotion including School WASH and WASH in Health Care Facilities

Humla, Mugu and Dolpa are the northern most and remotest district of Karnali Province. The federal structure comprises 4 Palikas, 8 Palikas in Dolpa and 7 Palikas in Humla. All the districts of Karnali province have already declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF) zone while total sanitation promotion has been initiated in few Palikas of aforesaid districts at small scale. Though, there is significant progress on installation and use of basic sanitation (i.e. construction and use of toilets) in these districts, the proper management and hygienic use of toilets, hand washing during critical time, child faces management, institutional WASH management and functionality of water supply schemes still remains a challenge. The ODF sustainability and its further improvement aligning with sustainable development goals (SDG # 6) is comprehended in these area as well.

Chhekampar Birthing Center and Outreach Clinic

Being one of the most beautiful and isolated places in the world, the Nepalese Himalaya also poses a threat for its inhabitants in terms of basic health care services. Living in the Tsum Valley means that it takes days to reach the doctor. Locals lack basic health facilities and maternal services. Antibiotics and other medicines aren’t available. One small cut can lead to blood poisoning, giving birth is highly challenging and even the flu can be fatal.
Given this scenario, Chay Ya has built a Birthing Center and Outreach Clinic in Tsum Nubri RM-7, Lar, Gorkha in association with Scouts of Austria, Medi Himal, Government of Austria and YONSED.
The Birthing Centre building is a single-storied dry stone with timber tie-beam construction, located in the center of Chhekampar VDC.
Health center was inaugurated on 28 October 2016 by District Public Health Officer- Gorkha, Mr. Kedar Raj Parajuli . The main objective of the center is to provide basic primary and maternity health services to the local people.

Free Health Camps

Chay Ya Nepal offers free mobile health camps. In remote mountain villages of Nepal medical services are limited. People have to walks 5-7 hours to see the next medical staff. Chay Ya team along with its local NGO partners have conducted several Free Health Camp in Gorkha, Rasuwa and Dolpa Districts. This health camp benefited people lacking basic health care facilities and medicines. Since 2012, team of doctors and nurses yearly visits the villages of Gorkha. Mules carry necessary medicines needed for the camp. We have to walk for several days to reach the villages with aid supplies like medicine, water filters, school materials and warm clothing for the children.
Every year around 700-800 patients receive medical care through Chay Ya.
